   A Monthly Council Merger Update
for Girl Scouts and the Community

Issue #5 • September, 2008

Council Delegates to Vote
During October Special Meetings

The six merging councils of the Greater Los Angeles Area are continuing preparations under the direction of the Council Realignment Committee (CRC) to form a single Girl Scout Council.

The soon-to-be-formed Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles, which will begin operations on Dec. 1, 2008 under the leadership of CEO Lise Luttgens and incoming Board of Directors President Janet Braun, will serve Los Angeles County and parts of San Bernardino County.

The councils will join Girl Scouts of the USA in a historic transformation to create Girl Scout councils that are better equipped to meet the needs of girls in today’s fast-changing world and to renew its focus on leadership development for girls in the 21st century.

This realignment will ensure that the nearly 50,000 girls and more than 22,000 adult members in the Greater Los Angeles Area will benefit from shared strengths and best practices and that the Girl Scout Experience will be available to more girls and volunteers.

The CRC is pleased to release the final drafts of the soon-to-be-formed Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles' By-laws, Articles of Incorporation, and the slate of nominees to be elected to the Board of Directors (click on the links or visit www.girlscoutsla.org).

Delegates from each merging council will review and approve these documents during their respective council's Special Delegate Meeting in October. The vote is part of the process that will complete the historic merger between the Greater Los Angeles Girl Scout councils.

Delegates will soon receive (or may have already) information and instructions from their respective councils regarding the meetings.

  • Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council
The council's delegates approved the merger of Girl Scouts of Central California South (GSCCS) through a mail-in ballot vote in August. With 458 valid votes cast (representing a quorum), 436 votes were in favor of the merger, 15 were against the merger, and seven withheld their vote. The northern part of Joshua Tree Council will merge with Girl Scouts Golden Valley Council on Oct. 1, 2008 to form the new council.

The southern portion of Joshua Tree Council (Los Angeles County, i.e. Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita Valley) will, as a "jurisdictional change," partner with Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles beginning Dec. 1, 2008. By voting for GSCCS, Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita members approved the contingent process that included the “jurisdictional change” for their regions.

The Antelope Valley and Santa Clarita Valley offices will continue operations and services to the local community. Some office functions, however, will be hosted by Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley Council (GSSFV) until the December merger. The two service centers operate independently with regional representatives from each department.
