   A Monthly Council Merger Update
for Girl Scouts and the Community

Issue #2 • May/June, 2008

The Council Realignment Committee (CRC) has been diligently working with various subcommittees comprised of representatives from the six legacy councils. Here's an update on the Greater Los Angeles Area Girl Scout Council merger process:

Jurisdiction and Property Information
The CRC has released the following maps and information about current properties leased or owned by the six legacy councils:

Five Headquarters Facilities
Fifteen Program and Mixed-use Centers
Seven Camp Facilities
One Marine Facility
One Nature Center (closed by city for renovation)

Troop Number Update
The CRC has approved a revised troop number configuration process. Since the previously announced configuration for troop numbers created duplicates within a council, the new plan is for each troop to use their current troop number with the legacy council number added to the end.

For example, if troop's current number is 402 and the council is Mt. Wilson, the new number will be 4021. If troop's number is 50 and the council is Joshua Tree, the new number will be 502. Troops will have a transition time to update numbers, such as when the troop bridges to another level.

Legacy council numbers (drawn from a hat):
1 Mt. Wilson
2 Joshua Tree
3 Long Beach
4 – Spanish Trails
5 – Angeles
6 – San Fernando Valley

Symbolically, new troop numbers represent a troop's association with the new council, while honoring each troop's current identity and connection to its legacy council.

Merger Update for Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council
The Los Angeles County portion of Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council will join the new council on Sept, 8, 2008 since it is participating in two mergers; the northern part of the council (Kern County) is merging with Girl Scouts Golden Valley Council in September, while Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles will not be formed until Dec. 1.

In the interim, Los Angeles County staff from Girl Scouts - Joshua Tree Council will work in partnership with Girl Scouts of the San Fernando Valley.
